Journée Outre-Mer Développement - 5/09/09

JOMD

An interesting meeting at OLPC Europe

OLPC-Europe
For writing my thesis, I managed to schedule some interviews with people who are working on or promoting ICT as an enhancer for development. Consequently, I had the opportunity to meet very passionate and fascinating people. My meeting with Thierry Devars, Responsible of the international relations at the Information Society and Media DG (European Commission), was one of the most informative and transparent I ever had. M. Devars was a very good educationalist and we talked almost two hours about development issues. I thank him for all his advice, and for his frankness. Listening to him convinced me more than never, that ICT and development were very relevant topics, and that the future of emerging countries, specially Africa, will be closely related to these issues.

The other meeting I would like to talk about, was the one which allowed me to touch and use the controversial XO computer, made by the One Laptop Per Child foundation. As you may know, the main mission of this NGO founded by Nicolas Negroponte (MIT), consist in bringing education to rural areas in developing countries, thanks to a low-cost computer, initially priced at US$100. Finally the XO is more expensive than expected US$180, but it is a great educative tool. I wanted to personally test it to make my one opinion on this device.

Some words about my master thesis

OLPC Cambodia
As you may know if you already read this post on my blog, I am not only doing an internship in Brussels, but I am also working on my Master thesis. Indeed, this year 2009, I'm achieving my last year of studies. To my mind a thesis (Master or Phd thesis, whatever) is a very relevant step in your education and personal curriculum.

So even if your teachers or lecturers do not except from you an extraordinary essay, I do think that you should be as ambitious as you can when it is about writing YOUR thesis. Because, this ultimate stage has something symbolic. It is probably the last academic project you will do and while reading your thesis people can judge your achievments and say what was on your mind at the end of your student life.

It is not always true, but your thesis is also a good indicator of what subject or sector are you the most interested in. Consequently, your master can have a significant influence on your professional orientations, and can permit to accede some career opportunities or just help you to find your way. Now, let's talk about the subject of my thesis.

SOLIDAYS 2009, Paris - Volunteer for SIDASOS

SOLIDAYS 2009
SOLIDAYS 2009
SOLIDAYS 2009

Three weeks ago, I contributed to the SOLIDAYS festival in Paris as a volunteer. I worked for a friends' association created in march 2009 called SIDASOS. Its aim is to prevent AIDS, mainly by focusing their activities on the young inhabitant of Brussels. When they were still students, Gaïa and Céline, the SIDASOS historic founders, realized that there was not any significant entity which was working to avert HIV and AIDS transmission to people of their generation.

Now SIDASOS is based on an loyal and dynamic team of volunteers (like me), and we plan to organize in Brussels a big solidarity festival to prevent AIDS, FESTIVAIDS. 30 artists, playing various kind of music (Rock, Pop, Soul, Hip-hop, Electro) are scheduled and the Show will take place in the Botanique (a famous salle in BXL).

The ambition of SIDASOS is to create in Brussels an music festival as famous and symbolic as SOLIDAYS in Paris. If you want to attend to a very special event and be solidaires to AIDS patient, I give you RDV on 25 to 26 september 2009. For more information you should take a look to the website of Festivaids and stay tuned...

A "sexy" electric car for urban executive

LUMENEO SMERA

Introduced as a world premiere at the Geneva Motor show in 2008, the amazing SMERA is about to hit European urban roads at the end of this summer. It came out with an ambitious and surprising design which leaves no one indifferent. Anyone walking past this electric motorized vehicle couldn't fail to be impressed by its look and its narrow dimensions (80 cm width and 2.40 m length).

The SMERA is a bright mix between a classic smart and the famous BMW C1. However, two (slim) people can fit inside with a satisfying comfort, and a better level of safety than with a classic Piaggio Mp3. Designed by a small family French firm called LUMENEO, the SMERA can go up to 130km/h with a convenient battery life of 150 km. You can recharge it with a simple electric plug and besides the SMERA has been built in with the latest technologic breakthroughs (Buck Rogers steering wheel, LCD screen, electronic stabilization).

I find this car very "sexy" as it seems ideal for a young and urban executive as I will be soon, hopefully… Everything is perfect, but the purchasing price: 24 900€... with the ecologic tax bonus. Fortunately by using the SMERA you will save money on the long run as it consumes very little. Unfortunately for me, I should wait a bit more time than I would to be a happy SMERA driver...

A new era is starting...

La_Catho_de_Lille

Last week I passed my last exams to get my Master 2 degree. That means that from today my student life is unofficially over!!! I still need to find an internship position abroad, but practically I don't have classes anymore... and I have to admit that it's quite strange to stop in the middle of the academic year. I already made many friends jealous...

Anyway now I hope I will have more time to post on my blog, because this year was incredibly intense in terms of working, responsibilities and decisions making. Currently I'm working on my Master thesis and is about how Internet can be a fantastic tool of politic mobilization. Maybe you will understand why this subject looks so interesting for me... Finally, I will post some surprises within 2 or 3 months, so stay tuned!

LEMUR : when music meets multitouch technology

STANTUM_LEMUR

Let me introduce you to the LEMUR, the first commercial device runs by multitouch technology. Launched in 2005, 2 years before Apple released the iPhone, by JazzMutant a French visionary start-up the LEMUR met with great success in the "microcosm" of electronic music.

"The true innovation of the Lemur lies in its unlimited touch points. Live performers are no longer limited by a single mouse click that does one task; they can now use all of their fingers for true multi-tasking. Lemur's multi-touch technology makes it possible to use all ten fingertips to accurately control multiple user-interface objects simultaneously. The agile responsiveness and radical differentiation of the Lemur has set the standard of what a controller should be".

This short presentation from the JazzMutant website perfectly demonstrates what the LEMUR is about : an amazing and futuristic instrument for playing music in a more intuitive and spectacular way. World famous artists like Daft punk or Björk and others like Raw Hedroom, Richard Devine or Stephan Bodzin have adopted all the LEMUR with enthusiasm. After viewing some music videos featured LEMUR, you will probably understand why... For my part, I am totally seduced by this extraordinary product and I am waiting for the day when I will be able to test it for real!

Valencia will surprise you!

Those who lived recently or are still living in Valencia, won't be surprise by this amazing TV commercial broadcasted by the Valencian tourism office. It just remind me how much I miss this city, and how much I enjoyed living there... I hope I will go back very soon to VLC, the best city in Spain... For me of course.

Congratulations US citizens for electing Obama

Obama victory speech

Flickr, cc license, Barack Obama

Three days ago a friend of mine, an American citizen, ask me a original request; she wanted to know what I and other French people think about Obama's election. Actually she is teacher in a school for young children, and she would like to share with her pupils various points of view from around the world about the presidential election. Why? Because she would like to demonstrate to them how important is to know what foreign people think about the United State of America and its new president. She told me, she was very surprised to notice how different was the way French were considering the USA during the last presidential elections, in 2004. This revelation change the way she considered her country, her government and mainly her president.

I appreciate her open mindedness, so I wrote the following long text (click on the link below) to answer her request. Sorry, for the moment the text is in French, but I will translate it soon. Stay tuned ;-)

iPhone Tech Talks World Tour (Paris)

iPhone tech talks world tour Given I applied to the iPhone development program, I was able to attend to the iPhone Tech Talks in Paris. So I did it, and it was very interesting... but I can not say more. Indeed, this event was under the Non disclosure Agreement that iPhone developers have to respect. Sorry dear friends. However, I promise you to let you know more about my future first iPhone application as soon as possible. Stay tuned!

The New Industrial World Forum (Paris)

Marc Davis and Me
Most of you probably do not know him, but the man who are on this photo with me is Marc Davis, the Chief Scientist of Yahoo! Connected Life. He did a really fascinating presentation about current and future progress in the social network technologies, during the New Industrial World Forum in Paris (october 3th & 4th). I really appreciate his keynote and his californian accent. From the few I knew about him, he seems to be a nice guy and a very brilliant scientist who studied in the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Have a discussion with this kind of people is always rewarding. By the way, thanks for the coffee, Mr Davis.

Obama for President

Obama campaign

I really like the symbolic meaning and the impact of this photo... Don't you? Obama is really creating an incredible hope movement and not only in the USA. Like many people I believe in him, I believe in his honesty and his willingness to seriously take the bull by the horns. If the current polls say the truth, Obama is more and more close to the white house, but the current situation is so explosive that he will have to implement quickly radical and maybe unpopular measures. I do think that the next presidency will be the most difficult one after the two Roosevelt administrations (1933-1945). But like billions of people around the world I believe in you, and your promises, Mr Obama. So please do not disappoint us...

Trainee period in Intermón OXFAM

Intermón

As you know, I spent one entire year in Spain - I miss my life and my friends there - and I finish this amazing experience by doing an internship in the spanish "subsidiary" of the famous NGO, Oxfam International. I worked there as a marketing assistant, and it was really educative and interesting. I will tell you more very soon.

Podemos

As everybody knows, except those who live on a planet outside of the solar system, this month it's the european football cup, la "Eurocopa" in Spanish. I am not going to talk about the elimination of France, but about the enthusiasm aroused in Spain by the Spanish national team.

It is pretty awesome to see how the Spanish are so proud and passionated by the european adventure of their national team. Everybody here, except maybe some Catalans ;-), are behind the Luís Aragones' team. Even the foreigners like me support this really endearing squad ; maybe because we know if they win we are probably going to live a very, very huge and unforgettable party.

To demonstrate you how big is the euphoria about this team and its successful journey, I want to introduce to you this serie of advertisements currently broadcasted to support the Spain football team, by the TV channel Cuatro - which got the rights to broadcast the "Eurocopa" matches. Obviously they spent a lot of money to produce these sophisticated commercials which give the feeling that the Spanish national football team is invincible. Even the slogan of this commercial campaign, "¡Podemos!" - which means "We Can!"- is very powerful and catchy. To sum-up what I think about them, just one word : Impressive!!! Now just enjoy them.

My musical skills (featuring Miguel :-)

Ced & Miguel

As I wrote it in my CV, I DO LOVE music. I am not only a music addict, I am also singer, song-writer and (digital) musician. Thanks to my flatmate Miguel, I start to learn playing guitar and I hope I will be able to play quite well before I leave Spain. Now I want to make you listen to our current main project ; since December Miguel and I have started to compose a mix between his Flamenco musical inclination and my Reggae-Soul vibes...and the following extract is at the moment the most interesting part of the song. Enjoy it!

My first job interview in Spanish

Fnac entry

Recently I applied to the Fnac store in Valencia in order to get a part-time job, because an ERASMUS year in a foreign country cost a lot. When you have to pay back your first student loan and really want to take advantage of your life in Spain, you have to seriously look for a job.

The first thing I have to admit is that I appreciated the fact that it was not necessary to write a cover letter. In Spain some things seem more direct and less formal; in this case it was a nice surprise, because I do think that the CV is the most important element when you apply for a job, mainly for a student job. Don't you think?

To my mind, the cover letter is a stylistic composition which lost its significance since most people copy and paste quotes from examples found on internet, type it on a computer, and just make some variations depending on the company they send it to. What matters more if an employer wants to know more about an applicant, it is not the job interview? During an interview there is no trick, you have to be real and show what you are worth.

That is what I think I did or at least I tried to do, in Spanish, when they interviewed me. In fact, the lady in charge of human resources called me just 3 or 4 weeks after I brought my CV to the store. I was agreeably surprised and really excited; my profile and my background obviously had captured her attention and she wanted to interview me the day after for a shop-assistant position in the computer department. Once I came back home I prepared the meeting with my flat mate during almost one hour. It was my first job interview in Spanish, to work for a company I like and to get a position in the department I wanted; I had to take it seriously.

Finally everything was ok. I was on time, very well dressed (maybe too much), enthusiastic and I did my best. Unfortunately there was only one vacant position, and a lot of other applicants that spoke Spanish much better than me. I was a bit disappointed but it was a very good experience. Despite the language barrier I stayed quite confident and I managed to express my motivation. This job examination encouraged me to work much harder to improve my Spanish, mainly for professional use. Which will be the following interview? Perhaps it could be next month with a HR responsible from Rural Caja, a big Spanish bank. We will see…

Visit of the Ford factory in Valencia

Ford Factory

There is something I really like about the University of Valencia; that is the incredible number of subjects available. Just a quick look in the “asignaturas de libre eleccion”/optional modules shows you the vast range of choice; for example you can study "Empresas y negocios en China" (Business in China) Or "Marketing on-line" (as I will study it in June) And some courses are taught both in Spanish and English. The only problem is that maybe there is a lack of information about all the opportunities offered by the University. The very worst informed about this are more often the ERASMUS students, but maybe most of us are not really interested.

Anyway, a few months ago I was checking my mail and I discovered a mail which invited students to subscribe to an interesting subject : “Gestión de la producción en el sector del automòvil”. As I like to learn new things I subscribed, and I think it was a really good idea! During 3 weeks we received intensive courses (5 hours with some short breaks) from various executives working for the Ford factory in Valencia, among the teachers we had the privilege of having the Director of production himself during the first session. And I have to admit that you quickly realize why is the Boss ; his presentation was the clearest; the most interesting, the most fascinating: definitely the best in fact.

But the best part of this module was visiting the factory in Almussafes (a village close to Valencia city), in one word: impressive!!! I think we were all like kids with wide-opened eyes, just amazed by what we discovered. I could not help asking myself how human beings could build such big and sophisticated thing. The manufacturing process of a car is really amazing: every 25 seconds a car was produced, in 270 hectares factory where work everyday 7300 people; we are talking about a real city! In 2006. The Ford plant in Almussafes was the one which produced most cars in Europe : 420 000. To conclude with figures, the Ford Motor share of the Valencian Community GDP was about 8,2%.

It was a really educational trip. No regrets. The next plant I want to visit: An Intel’s microprocessor factory. Can someone in the audience help me?

"Hate cannot drive out hate ; only love can do that."

C

You already know the man, and you already know about his struggles, I just want to say that it’s a pity he died so soon and mainly in such a violent way, because he was a real symbol of hope for several million people who used to be treated inhumanly for centuries. MLK was inspiring, not only for black people but also for those who really wanted to live in a fairer society, more peaceful, more respectful of human rights and more positive. When this hope bringer disappeared, the only lit fire which was sufficiently convincing and charismatic to make them believe in a better future, it was a disaster that nothing or no one could fix or recover. A drama which still has tragic consequences today. Since MLK, none US leader has managed to give America so much hope and confidence in a better future. No one, until today…

Say hello to my Aiphone :-)

My_Aiphone

You know what? I just realized yesterday I was a lucky & happy « AiPhone » owner! In fact, since Tuesday 24th I have been in France for Easter holidays so I have decided to spend some days in my flat in Lille (North of France). The other day, while my friend was ringing my intercom so I would open the door for her, I noticed for the first time the brand of this such trivial device and consequently the name of the company which manufactured it ; it was such a surprise when I noticed that I already had an Aiphone ;-) Furthermore, the same day by coincidence I learnt that Apple had been negociating since last year with Aiphone, Japan’s largest intercom maker - based in Nagoya, in order to find a satisfactory agreement for both companies to use the name iPhone fairly (the pronunciation and the spelling are the same in Japanese), when the "Jesus Phone" will be released in few months on the japanese cellphones market. As a present for you I have taken a shot of my revolutionary and ultra-sophisticated Aiphone GF-1MD... Please, don't be jealous!!!
